The State Health Plan

The State Health Plan for Teachers and State Employees is committed to helping members get healthy and stay healthy.  The goals for the Comprehensive Wellness Initiative (CWI) include:

  • Helping members and their families succeed in reaching optimal health
  • Improve members’ health status so that the Plan is strengthened long-term
  • Control out of pocket costs for all Plan members

Wellness Statistics

United States

According to the US Department of Health & Human Services, for every 100 employees in this country:
  • 27 have cardiovascular disease
  • 24 have high blood pressure
  • 50 or more have high cholesterol
  • 26 are overweight by 20% or more
  • 10 are heavy drinkers
  • 59 don’t get adequate exercise
  • 44 suffer from stress
North Carolina

According to the 2008 N.C. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), more than 65% of N.C. adults are overweight or obese and their weight is above the national average.

  • 56% are not meeting the physical activity recommendation
  • 78% are not meeting the fruits or vegetables recommendation
*Members eligible for NC HealthSmart Services are members whose primary health coverage is through the State Health Plan. Federal law prohibits the State Health Plan from using your personal health information to discriminate against you in any way or from giving this information to your employing agency/school or other unauthorized third party, unless required by law.
