North Carolina State Health Plan Executive Administrator Appointed to the North Carolina Institute of Medicine’s Board of Directors

Raleigh, N.C.  ­ George C. Stokes, executive administrator of the North Carolina State Health Plan, was appointed to the North Carolina Institute of Medicine’s board of directors on Monday, January 7, 2008.

Stokes joins a group of 27 health care leaders from across the state on the North Carolina Institute of Medicine’s board. Stokes has been a member of the North Carolina Institute of Medicine since 2006, when he was appointed by the Governor. As a board member, Stokes will serve a 3-year term. 

The North Carolina Institute of Medicine is an independent, quasi-state agency that serves as a non-political source of analysis and advice on issues of relevance to the health of North Carolina’s population. The North Carolina Institute of Medicine is governed by the board of directors, and directed by the President and CEO.

“We are very pleased to have George Stokes as a part of our board of directors,” said Pam Silberman, JD, DrPH, President and CEO of the North Carolina Institute of Medicine. “His extensive experience in all aspects of health care administration and executive management will make him a valuable addition to the board.”

In April 2005, Stokes joined the State Health Plan, which covers more than 644,000 state employees, teachers, retirees, current and former lawmakers, state university and community college personnel, state hospital staff and their dependents. Through his executive leadership and collaborative approach, Stokes has elevated quality of care and service, while focusing on the improved health status of members.

Prior to joining the State Health Plan, he held leadership positions in non-profit and for-profit organizations including hospitals, medical centers, health insurance companies and government agencies. Stokes spent 12 years with Kaiser Foundation Health Plan in key management positions, ranging from medical office administrator to vice president and president.

Stokes holds a master’s degree in Social Work from Boston College and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Wilberforce University. He also completed the Executive Management Program at Stanford Graduate School of Business.
