State Health Plan Receives Award

June 23, 2005

CHAPEL HILL–The NC Teachers’ and State Employees’ Comprehensive Major Medical Plan (State Health Plan) received the 2005 NC Prevention Performance Award for Health Plan Excellence. The award, presented by NC Prevention Partners at their annual meeting on June 15, 2005 at the William and Ida Friday Center in Chapel Hill, was accepted by the State Health Plan’s Disease and Care Management Program Administrator, Lisa Bultman; Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Consultant, Casey Herget; and Population Health Management Coordinator, Dale Floyd.

Health promotion and disease prevention have become a focal point of State Health Plan initiatives with leadership and support from NC Senator Tony Rand, NC Representative Thomas Wright and the State Health Plan’s Executive Administrator, George Stokes, and medical director, Dr. Larry Wu.

The State Health Plan released its first report card in June 2004 highlighting the health of its membership and to stress the need for prevention in health care. A leadership summit: Investing in Teacher and State Employee Health, brought leaders together from across the state to learn ways to improve employee health and productivity through work-based activities and policy changes focusing on the prevention of disease and disability.

Several pilot programs have also been created to learn how best to help employees quit tobacco use, manage diabetes and lead healthy lifestyles through improved nutrition and physical activity.

"We are committed to providing all our members throughout the state and many workplaces with services that support healthy decision-making", says State Health Plan Executive Administrator George Stokes. "We want to be more than just a claims payer; we want to be our member's health partner -- providing wrap-around healthy living programs and policy changes that support our members at work, at home and at the doctor's office."

In addition, with legislative approval, the State Health Plan will hire a care management vendor this summer that will provide health risk assessments and lifestyle and health coaching for members statewide. This strategy will help healthy members stay healthy and less healthy members better manage their health needs.
