Being able to see clearly is something most people take for granted-unless they start to lose their vision. The problem is, by the time people start to notice changes in their vision, their eyes have often already been permanently damaged. That's why it's important to protect your eyes before problems start.

RIF and Health Coverage

medical symbolEmployees who lose their job as a result of a reduction in force (RIF) will continue to have coverage under the State Health Plan for up to twelve months, as long as the employee has twelve or more months of service and the employee was covered by the State Health Plan at the time of separation from service.

Employees may continue coverage for their eligible dependents during this 12-month period.  The employee and any dependents will remain on the employing unit's billing statement while receiving RIF benefits.  The employing unit is responsible for collecting and remitting any applicable premiums.

The State of Member Health Report 2008
GREAT NEWS!  NC HealthSmart programs and Haminterventions are working!  Members are better managing their chronic conditions.  As a result, Plan savings totaled $18 million in 2007.  This means that for every $1 spent on the Health Coaching program, $2 are saved.  Next, the State Health Plan will focus on wellness efforts to prevent chronic disease.  These results and next steps are outlined in The State of Member Health: Trends and Interventions for Plan Members 2008.

New Prescription Refill Guidelines

prescription bottleImportant information regarding allowable prescription refill dates

The State Health Plan for Teachers and State Employees will be following new guidelines for prescription refills beginning on March 2, 2009. The new prescription refill guidelines are being implemented to comply with pharmacy "best practice" standards and regulatory requirements. Most members will not notice a change when they order a prescription refill. The updated prescription refill guidelines will be used to review member prescription history to calculate when a medication is eligible for refill. Click here to read more.
Reminder to Verify Pay Statements after Health Plan Changes
Please remind your employees of the importance of reviewing their monthly pay statements after a coverage type change (changing from employee-family coverage to employee-only coverage), which results in a change in their payroll deduction.  This is a way for employees to verify that their requested coverage change was made.
Health Fairs
HamThe State Health Plan continues to support disease management, preventive services and wellness activities. However, because of current budget constraints, the State Health Plan will not be attending health fairs until further notice.  The State Health Plan also encourages members to check out our Web site for the latest news on pharmacy programs, NC HealthSmart and worksite wellness programs.
