Who's Covered?
The State Health Plan provides health care coverage to more than 649,000 teachers, state employees, retirees, current and former lawmakers, state university and community college personnel, state hospital staff and their dependents. A breakdown of that total includes:
- More than 486,000 active employees and dependents. (Dependents include spouses and unmarried children under age 19-or under age 26 if full-time students.)
- More than 2,000 COBRA participants and their dependents.
- More than 161,000 retirees and their dependents.
NC Health Choice
In addition, the State Health Plan administers NC Health Choice, which provides health insurance to uninsured children in NC. NC Health Choice is a fee-for-service program providing free or low-cost health insurance for children and teens up to their 19th birthday. In addition to the health benefits -- vision, dental and hearing services are covered and follow the same guidelines as Medicaid. More than 127,000 children are covered under NC Health Choice.

Funding and Compliance
