Fosamax, Actonel
If you are taking Actonel® for osteoporosis or another bone-related diagnosis, please note the following:
As of October 1, 2007, Actonel® will be placed in the non-preferred copay tier, for which members will pay $50 for up to a 34-day supply. Any members who wish to remain on Actonel® will be required to have their health care provider complete a coverage review with Medco, the State Health Plan’s prescription drug benefit manager, to determine whether Actonel® can continue to be covered under their prescription benefit plan.
Fosamax®, another medication used to treat the same conditions as Actonel®, will continue to be available on the State Health Plan Preferred Drug List for a $30 copay for up to a 34-day supply and will continue to be covered without requiring a coverage review.
Please talk to your doctor to see if Fosamax® is right for you. If your doctor believes you should continue to take Actonel®, you or your doctor can request a coverage review. Unless your doctor obtains approval, you will be responsible for the full cost of the medication.
